VR Projects Through Unity 3D
University of Minnesota Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Projects (March-June 2018)
The University of Minnesota projects were completed under the supervision of Dr. Ehsan Naderi, Ph.D. IDSA.
Project: 1 Explored the potential of employing augmented reality technology in point-of-sale to promote sustainable consumption behavior. I created interactive product promotion content, using Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality goggles.
Project: 2 Explored relationship between the level of immersion and users sense of presence in the virtual environments. I worked with advanced features of Unity3D program to refine and test the interactive prototype for the Oculus Rift virtual reality device.

Holoportation Demo 2017 (Virtual Reality with Augmented Reality Capabilities)
Description:
This project was created to bring online players in VR to your actual living space using Oculus rift CV1. In order to see the environment around you when playing VR (with the ability to bring friends into your play space), I created a digital model of my surroundings to perfect scale and brought it into VR. I then used VR Chats SDK to allow other players to join. Both the actual living space and VR space are in perfect sync with one another, allowing you to experience and walk around in augmented reality through your VR headset.
Process and Tools Used
Step 1: Measure every dimension in my apartment down to the nearest half inch and create multiple sketches outlining the dimensions (including furniture).
Step 2: Modeled apartment room and added my furniture using Google Sketchup and imported textures from my Apartment . Step 3: Convert Sketchup model into an obj file and transfer it to the Unity game engine. Step 4: Setup colliders, optimize room, and add realist lighting. Step 5: Import VRChat SDK (software development kit) into Unity and adjust settings to make it compatible for VRChat. Step 6: Submit Apartment to VRChat team and wait for approval. Now I am able to put on my headset and invite friends to my apartment room while being able to walk around without hitting anything. My friends will be able to see where I am exactly standing and walking in my apartment room I wanted to take this a step further. I wanted to play as myself in virtual reality. Step 7: I stood still for 20 minutes while a friend used an i-pad structure scanner and Occipital Scanner 3D scanning app to scan my entire body from head to toe in a T pose. Step 8: I converted the model into an obj and touched up the model in Blender and reduced the number of polygons. Step 9: The model was uploaded to Mixamo for Rigging/animation. Step 10: I used the VRChat's software development kit and Unity animator to make the model of myself compatible for VRChat. I am now able to play as myself in virtual reality seeing my own hands, arms, legs and body while roaming around my actual apartment in real time using virtual reality. |
